“What services does La Merced Family Practice offer?”

We provide comprehensive medical care for the entire family, including routine check-ups, preventive care, chronic disease management, sick visits, school and work physicals, clinical laboratory testing, Point of care ultrasound (POCUS), and more.

“Do you see patients of all ages?”

Yes. We see children, adolescents, young, adults, and seniors.

“Do I need an appointment to be seen?”

No appointment is required. We accept walk-ins, but if you prefer, you may call us to schedule an appointment.

“Do you accept health insurance?”

We currently do not accept health insurance. However, if you have insurance, we will provide a detailed receipt so you can submit a claim to your insurance company and request reimbursement according to your plan benefits.

“What languages do you offer care in?”

We offer care in Spanish and English. Our entire staff is bilingual, and we do not use interpreters.

“What are your office hours?”

● Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

● Saturday: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (by appointment)

“What should I bring to my visit?”

We recommend bringing a list of your current medications and any relevant medical documents.

Medical team at La Merced Family Practice

Dr. Jose Rodriguez Barrantes is a Board Certified Family Medicine specialist based in Birmingham, AL, with an extensive experience in Hospital Medicine.

He went to medical school at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Nicaragua, earning the MD title, "Doctor en Medicina y Cirugia" in 2002. He became ECFMG (www.ecfmg.org) certified in 2008 and before getting into Residency in Family Medicine at St. Vincent's East Program in Birminham, he worked as a research coordinator in general medicine and cardio-thoracic surgery.

Dr. Rodriguez Barrantes currently works as a hospitalist at UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham and has been a part of its medical staff for over ten years. He is also a staff member at UAB St. Vincent's East, UAB St. Vincent's Chilton and Baptist Prattville hospital.

His experience spans hospital medicine, family practice, and clinical research in primary care, vaccines and cardiothoracic surgery. He later became a member of his local Institutional Review Board advocating for research patient's safety. He's been part of Ethics committee as well.
